Meet Hambone

Hambone is a brown capuchin monkey (Cebus apella) born in 1998 and came to Noah’s Ark in 2002.  He was confiscated from an individual’s home in South Georgia where he and his monkey friend, Elvis, were living in filthy, neglectful conditions.  Hambone’s owner had attempted to file his teeth down to lessen the severity of a bite, which left the pulp of the teeth exposed.  Both he and Elvis have undergone multiple surgeries to repair the damage to their mouths inflicted upon them by humans. In 2012, Hambone somehow broke his back leg so severely it needed amputation.  Staff members still don’t know how it happened, but Hambone once again showed that the fighting spirit of a wild animal is a force to be reckoned with as he continues to be the alpha monkey in the capuchin pod (and the largest!) despite having only 3 legs.
